Paraphrasing

The spinning jenny was invented in 1764 by James Hargreaves. It was a significant invention as it meant that cloth could be produced more quickly and on a larger scale. (Jones, 2021)

N.B. If you have already named the author in the text, only the publication year needs to be mentioned in brackets.

 

Quoting

"In 1764, James Hargreaves invented the spinning jenny. This was a breakthrough in the production of cloth as it could produce eight times as much material as a single spinning wheel." (Jones, 2021)
