The St Clare's College Referencing Guide follows the Harvard Referencing Style

Sample Bibliography/Reference list

Tips for writing a bibliography:

  • Start your bibliography on a new page and give your page a heading.
  • Do not divide your bibliography into different sections based on different types of sources, list everything together in alphabetical order.
  • Try to record the details of your sources as you use them rather than when you have finished your task.

Tips to avoid accidental plagiarism

Plagiarism is presenting someone else's words or ideas as your own, without proper acknowledgement. It is a type of intellectual theft. It is important that you understand what plagiarism is so you can avoid it. It is equally important that you develop effective research and referencing skills so that you know how to acknowledge the work of others.

Sample in-text reference

Tips for using direct quotations:

Short Quotation (less than 40 words)

  • Longer quotations should start on a separate line with a free line above and below.
  • Indent quotation at left and right margins so it is 'blocked.'

Reference List vs Bibliography

A bibliography includes all the sources referred to and read/accessed as part of your research, even if they haven’t been referred to in your work. These sources should be referenced using the St Clare's College Guide and listed in alphabetical order by family/organisation name.

A reference list includes the details of all the cited sources in your text i.e. all of the sources that you have referenced in your work. These sources should be referenced using the St Clare's College Guide and listed in alphabetical order by family/organisation name.
