Task Overview

You are a guest lecturer at the ANU School of History and have been invited to present a seminar entitled:

‘Religion as a Tool of Power for Empire’

For your seminar you will be required to compare and contrast the ways in which two empires used religion as a tool of power throughout history. You are required to select one empire from category A and one empire from category B for the task.

Category A Ottoman Empire, Mongol Empire

Category B Spanish Empire, British Empire

You may choose to pre-record your presentation or present “live”. If pre-recording you must be present on screen for at least half your presentation. Voice over alone is not sufficient.

Your 6 - 8 minute presentation should:

1. Provide a brief overview of your chosen empires.

2. Describe the ways in which your chosen empires used religion to maintain control/power over their subjects.

3. Evaluate the positives/negatives for each empire’s approach to religion (if applicable).

4. Provide an opinion explaining which approach you believe to be the most effective at maintaining control/power.

5. Demonstrate engagement with a range of academic sources.

Submission: On the due date your transcript, presentation slides (including in text-references for your sources) and reference list are to be submitted via Turnitin.
