Religious Studies Guides: Colonisation of Aboriginal people and the experiences of Missionaries

Task Overview

You are a government official living in NSW prior to federation. You have been tasked with investigating the role of missions and reserves and their impact on Aboriginal populations.  

You have been asked to gather evidence of the experiences of people on a missions and to report back with your findings. 

You will need to: 

  1. Select a specific mission to visit. 

  1. Provide an introduction to outline the context of this mission (year established, religion affiliation, number of people living on the mission, general impression of conditions) 

  1. Provide 2 interview summaries from:

  • A religious missionary 

  • An Aboriginal person 

Your transcripts should focus particularly on the role of religion and the impact on culture and communities 

  1. Provide a short conclusion to summarise your findings.
