Task Instructions

Your task : Practical Report: Determining specific heat capacity for iron and brass

From the information, images and videos given below describing the experimental procedure your teacher conducted in the school laboratory, you will:

  • Appropriately treat the data collected in the experiment so to be able to plot graphs and use graphical analysis to determine specific heat capacity of iron and brass. Note that in order to determine the results necessary for plotting graphs you will add as many columns as needed to the raw data tables.

  • Apply the following formulae:  q=mcΔT q=mcΔT qreleased+qabsorbed=0qreleased+qabsorbed=0 and use results of calculations to plot the graphs. The xx and yy variables on the graphs should be plotted in such way to allow you to find specific heat capacity iron and brass. These are the measured values for the specific heat capacity of iron and iron brass.

  • Analyse reliability and validity of data, compare them to the accepted (theoretical) values of specific heat capacity of iron and brass.

  • Calculate and analyse experimental errors

Use the percentage difference equation to determine the difference between the measured value and the theoretical value:

% difference=measured value−theoretical valuemeasured value×100%% difference=measured value−theoretical valuemeasured value×100%

  • Give your final result in the form:

c=c0±Δcabsolutec=c0±∆cabsolute

  • Suggest methods for improvement of accuracy

  • Propose alternative experimental techniques

  • Critique the experimental procedure and its relevance

  • Draw conclusion about experimental procedure and it's outcomes

  • Proofread before submission

  • Referenced resources following STCC guidelines

You should communicate your findings concisely, effectively and accurately, demonstrating scientific literacy with appropriate evidence and accurate referencing.
