YEAR 10 HEALTH SEMESTER 1 ASSESSMENT TASK – SPORTS SCIENCE MODULE 

PART A: 

Year 10 Sports Science Assessment Task Part A: Writing Task Strategy Lesson (Not assessed) 

Your HPE teacher will deliver writing task strategies which will explicitly support your ability to complete the assessable task which is part B. This lesson will target the following: 

  • Reading through the material 

  • Highlighting the major ideas 

  • What different points of view are presented in the stimulus 

  • What information is the stimulus providing 

  • Decide: What is the issue being raised by the stimulus 

  • What questions does the stimulus raise? 

  • How do I see the issue, do I have a view? 

  • What evidence can I offer in order to build an argument? 

  • Begin brainstorming and noting down what you know and have read about the topic.  

PART B: 

Year 10 Sports Science Assessment Task Part B: Length 500 to 600 words 

You have been tasked by the Australian Sports Commission to prepare a report to be delivered to a group of high school students looking to become sports journalists when they leave school. These students will, as part of their degree, complete a semester of work in their first year titled “Sociology of Sport”. Your report is designed to educate them on current sport related issues. 

Choose one of the following topics (see descriptions and questions with resource links in LibGuide below)

  1. The Australian Sporting Identity 

  2. Money and Sport 

  3. Transgender athletes 

  4. Women and Sport 

  5. Racism and Sport 

Essential Criteria for Part B: 

Throughout your Part B response you should show: 

  • a well-structured introductory paragraph that outlines the direction of your response 

  • a concluding paragraph/statement that accurately wraps up your argument 

  • reasoning or detail as required by the question (eg. Question 5 – three recent case studies) 

  • logical and relevant argument  

  • evidence that your work has been proofread 

  • correct spelling, punctuation and grammar

1) The Australian Sporting Identity

The recent global pandemic changed the face of sport in Australia and around the world. What have you learned about the place of sport in Australian society and its role in shaping an Australian identity through the time of the pandemic? 

In the first episode of 'Our Sporting Nation,' John Clarke, arguably Australia's greatest natural athlete, looks at how Australia came to take its sport so seriously and what it means to be a sporting nation. 3) Transgender athletes

Since 2004, transgender athletes have been allowed to compete at the Olympics, however, no one has done so until the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games. Do you think transgender female athletes have an unfair advantage? Justify your response with relevant case studies.

2) Money and Sport

In December 2020 six-time NBA All-Star forward Paul George signed a maximum contract extension with the LA Clippers that guarantees him as much as $US 226 million for the next five seasons. With this in mind discuss the following. a) Is this sort of money appropriate in today’s world? Why/why not? b) Do pay cheques this size influence the credibility of sport? What responsibilities does this place on the athlete? 

4) Women and Sport

Over the last few years the prominence of women’s sport in Australia has increased significantly. Do Australian sportswomen currently get the recognition and financial rewards that they deserve in this country? Justify your response with at least three reasons or relevant case studies. 

5) Racism and Sport

Does racism exist in sport? Is this a reflection of society in general? Discuss, justifying your response with at least three recent case studies to support your answer.
