Legal Studies Guides: Family Law

Task Overview

Evaluate whether current Family Law legislation is meeting the needs of society

You are to select a Family law issue, examine the legal and social implications and prepare a report of your findings for submission to the Family Law Research Agency. The Family Law Research Agency is a government funded agency tasked with providing recommendations to government on issues and improvements in Family Law.

In your research report to the Family Law Research Agency you should: • Introduce your topic and include key questions

• Explain the issue (overview, definitions, funding, policies)

Summarise current law (legislation and relevant cases) and critically analyse why the current legislation is/is not meeting the needs of society

Evaluate recent or proposed changes to the law (analyse why the changes were made or what changes need to be made and why).

Critically analyse the potential impact(s) on individuals and society (stakeholders) now and into the future.

Develop and justify recommendations about the best way to address this issue, including any changes to legislation or legal processes.

Case evidence is needed to support and develop arguments and ideas throughout the report. Analyse, in detail, cases relevant to the legal issues in your chosen topic.

Your report must include sources, referenced using the Harvard referencing system. Refer to the LibGuide on referencing.
