Languages Guide: Inquiry Task: Is belonging essential to our sense of identity?

Task Overview

You will choose an aspect of culture that interests you and that will allow you to address the inquiry question: Is belonging essential to our sense of identity?

Using this research, choose a text type. You could choose from articles, speeches, news reports, emails, etc. In your text please cover the following points:

  • Define and explain concepts of identity and belonging in your chosen context (e.g. people belonging to two cultures, non-traditional families, gender diversity, religious groups, school culture, work culture, sports club culture etc.)
  • Explore your own sense of identity and belonging. How is your identity constructed and what does it mean to you and the group(s) you identify with?

Use your research to compare and contrast an aspect of Italian culture with your own experience of belonging in Australia.

In 'A Sense of Identity' Child Psychologist Andrew Fuller hosts a frank, honest discussion of identity with a panel of teens of various ages, gender and cultural backgrounds. Hear how young people build positive self identity and self esteem, learn how negative self identity impacts on behaviour and attitudes, and see how a teen's online identity relates to their real-world identity. The panel shares their personal insights, revealing how clothing, family, culture, religion, peers and school all impact on their sense of identity.
